When the pupils finish Foundation Level, they start KS1. This stage covers Yr1 and Yr2 when the pupils will be aged from 5 to 7. It covers the infant period of a child's academic development. A lot of teachers enjoy this stage of development. The pupils build on their learning from Foundation Level and begin to be taught in a more formal way.
At the end of Key Stage 1 pupils are involved in SATS which are mainly administered by the Yr2 teacher. These tests often take a less formal (though just as important) approach than later Key Stage assessments. Teachers have flexibility over when to administer these tests. Supply teacher responsibilities include ensuring the safety of pupils:
- Take a register
- Make regular head counts of pupils, especially if the pupils have to leave the classroom
- Check you know exactly where every pupil you are responsible for is at all times, particularly if a pupil leaves the classroom for whatever reason
- Always make sure pupils go to an appropriate adult after school. Check with the school office if a pupil tells you about a change in his/her routine i.e. a different person will be collecting him/her from school
- Follow the school behavior management policy
Additional checklist:
- Always arrive with suitable work BUT if pupils have been set work by the school obviously that must be used
- Essential to mark all work unless you are instructed not to
- Leave a feedback comment/evaluation for the absent teacher
- Be prepared for PE by keeping a spare kit in the car boot
- Remember to enjoy the lesson and give lots of praise where possible
