Cover Supervisor

What makes a good cover supervisor?

  • Resilience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Someone who enjoys working with young learners
  • A sense of humour

  • A good general knowledge and level of education
  • A desire to develop professionally

supervise whole classes during the short-term absence of teachers;
give instructions for the lesson as provided by a teacher;
maintain good order and to keep pupils on task;
respond to general questions and provide general feedback to teachers;
will work under the professional direction of teachers

Cover Supervisors will not:

be required to undertake ‘specified work’ (planning, preparation, delivery, assessment, recording and reporting of achievement, progress and development).

Where schools are employing Cover Supervisors they will want, and need, to ensure that there are rigorous monitoring procedures in place to ensure staff are implementing the school’s policies and fulfilling the requirements of their job description.
